چکیده

Robert M. Kaiser University of Wisconsin-Extension Dairy Agent Introduction Across the Midwest, ethanol plants (primarily dry mill vs. wet mill process) are being planned and built and existing plants expanded. Today over 98 percent of commercially produced ethanol is used to extend gasoline. The attributes of ethanol allow it to be utilized as an octane booster, replacing gasoline additives such as lead and benzene, and as the preferred oxygenate for gasoline replacing MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether). Ethanol maintains widespread support for its ability to improve the environment and public health by reducing harmful vehicle emissions. Ethanol contains 35% oxygen and adding ethanol to fossil fuels (gasoline and diesel) results in more complete fuel combustion, reducing tailpipe emissions. Ethanol is non-toxic and is rapidly biodegraded in surface water, ground water and soil. Current energy legislation before congress contains a Renewable Fuels Standard which, if approved, will further accelerate the growth of ethanol and biodiesel production.

Can We Feed More Distillers Grains?

Distillers grains is a very good protein source (>30% crude protein) which is high in ruminally undegradable protein and is very good energy source (NEL ~1.02 Mcal/lb of dry matter; [DM]) for lactating cows and growing cattle. The modest fat concentration (10 to 12% of DM) and the readily digestible fiber (39% neutral detergent fiber; NDF) contribute to the high energy in distillers grains. The...

Development of a Standardized Nutrient Matrix for Corn Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles

The rapid increase in production of ethanol from corn and other grains has resulted in growing quantities of byproducts, primarily distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS). The use of DDGS in poultry diets is not new, but the supply of product encourages the use of higher percentages than has typically been used in the past. As greater quantities are used in the diet, it becomes increasingl...

Ensiling Wet Distillers Grains with Other Feeds

things that can be noted immediately is that except for ADF, NDF, and calcium, distillers grains supply more nutrients relative to the requirements of cattle than the other feeds. When comparing with straw, protein in distillers grains is six times greater, whereas phosphorus is eight times greater. The high sulfur concentration in distillers grains also may pose a constraint, particularly when...

Evaluation of Wet Distillers Grains in Finishing Diets for Yearling Steers

A feeding trial was conducted with 940-lb yearling steers fed 113 days to determine the feeding value of distillers grains relative to corn grain. Replacing corn and urea with wet distillers grains for 20% of the diet dry matter tended to increase gain with no increase in feed consumption, resulting in improved feed conversion. Replacing 40% of diet dry matter with wet distillers grains decreas...
